Reality really starts to set in when that first check is received from the unemployment insurance fund. The check amount is not even close to your regular salary. Most other insurance policies at least match a loss. It's totally up to people to individually develop their own career insurance.
Being on unemployment was one of the lowest points in my career. The United States Marine Corps had invested $100,000 training me in electronics and microwave communications technology. When I was discharged from the U.S.M.C. I couldn't find a job. Filing for unemployment insurance kept me solvent for 6 months. With all the high tech quality training I received from the U.S.M.C. I was only able to land a job with a company that fixed answering machines. The upshot is the job paid way more than I was making being on unemployment. So that worked for me and the unemployment office.
Making it a daily "To Do", networking is the secret to success with having job offer choices. Let's rewind to see how this is accomplished. Many people network. Most people fail miserably in achieving the results they expect from networking. So they say networking does not work.
Since that unemployment experience many years ago, most of the jobs and all business opportunities I obtained has been achieved through developing a trusted network. That means networking whether you need to or not. The best time to network is when you don't need anything. Use this time to expand your sphere of influence; for yourself, family, friends and associates. When you're at the top of your business game, you're in the best position to help other people. The goal is to position yourself as a networking leader. You become central rain maker of your network.
People are more willing to help you, when you stay in touch regularly. That's called developing relationships. Calling someone only when you need something is called relationship abuse, "drive by" networking or networking leeching. Asking people how you can help them and doing it, pays long term dividends from the good will bank.
The best unemployment insurance is the opportunity crops produced from the seeds we plant with human capital relationships. Wouldn't be nice to be able to make a few phone calls that lead to multiple interviews. Before you know it, you're in that envious position of having to decide which 1 of 3 job offers to accept. This scenario is not a dream. It happens everyday. As you read this article, people are experiencing the success of no down time between jobs.
Many organizations offer opportunities to network, but none of them teaches how to network. So you're set up for failure before you go to your first networking event.
