Step #5: Connect with advocates. Based on advocates identified in step #3, it's time to make that move by contacting them. This is usually the most difficult step to get past. Yes, you must pick up that old technology, referred to as a telephone, to call advocates

Write out a telephone script. Ask friends, family or business associates to play advocate so you can practice your presentation. Practice, practice, practice so your introduction rolls off your your tongue naturally. This builds confidence. INTERACTIVE TALK-SHOW TO DEBUT ON 107.7 THE BRONC ON SEPTEMBER 19

Not so long ago, job-seekers and other career-minded professionals used to pore over the Sunday classifieds in search of that next position, the one that might take them to the next level of business.

Starting September 19, career-climbers can simply tune into 107.7 The Bronc, the on-campus radio station at Rider University, on Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. for a new and interactive call-in program entitled Your Career is Calling: Your Weekly Appointment for Career Choices, Decisions and Success. The one-hour show, hosted by Frank Kovacs ’84 and Rod Colon, will debut this weekend around the topic of “Building, Tracking and Maintaining Your Network.” It’s a subject particularly close to the heart of Kovacs, a 1984 Rider graduate who is the founder and CEO of The Breakfast Club NJ, a 3,000-member networking group established to promote career growth, special networking and help people in career transition.

“Radio was a logical next step for us,” explained Kovacs, who founded Breakfast Club NJ in the wake of the September 11 attacks to help restore what he calls “a semblance of order” to the lives of myriad professionals who, during that time of economic and financial uncertainty, suddenly found themselves on the job market after years of relative security.

“So many people were out of tune with the current ways of the market,” said Kovacs, who co-hosts the show with Colon , CEO of The ETP (Empowering Today’s Professionals) Network. “They hadn’t looked for a new job in 20 years, and suddenly had to represent themselves again.”

For years, Kovacs had been a senior manager at a major New Jersey Bank, and had seen corporate culture shape the role of people in his role – and not always for the better.

“In the earlier part of my career, a huge part of managing was the career management of the people who reported to them,” he explained. “In many cases, the focus on that had lessened a great deal, but I had always prided myself on developing people along the way.”

Fueled by this passion for steering careers in the right direction, Kovacs began his small networking club, meeting once a month in accessible, central locations. It has since grown by leaps and bounds, incorporating social media like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to expand his base of professional contacts.

“Job-hunting is a game of inches,” said Kovacs, who estimates that 85 percent of jobs are obtained as the result of networking. “If we can give them that little edge, we remain vital.”

Your Career is Calling is the next step in Kovacs’s commitment to area networking, and he calls his partnership with Rider and 107.7 The Bronc a key opportunity to expand his reach. “I think we’ll introduce ourselves to a whole new audience, in addition to the people who we’re already in touch with through The Breakfast Club NJ,” he said. Tom has remained a very active ETP member whether in a transition job search or gainfully employed. This what smart savvy ETP members do.

Tom explains the results in his own words . . .

"Teaching my first Computer Science (CS111) course at Georgian Court was fantastic!

I covered all the material I had planned. I wasn't aware of it previously but last night I discovered I have a skill for detecting when students are disengaging and how to pull their attention back. I've been told by many friends that I'm a great teacher and I could see that in myself last night.

Of course, I'll still keep my high paying day job, but it's great to be developing an alternate source of income and strengthening my career back up plan.

Yesterday my current manager joked about how in a few short years I've gone from being unemployed to over-employed. He also stated that he wish he had the foresight, like I have, to develop a long term career plan.

I also met up with a couple of my former fellow graduate students who teach at Brookdale as well as OCC and are ready to make introductions there when I wish. I guess I'm always networking :-)

I'm sure both ETP and Toastmasters have greatly contributed toward my success of procuring the position and the effectiveness of being an Adjunct Professor.

Overall it was a great night toward a new chapter for the CEO of Me, Inc!"

Good morning Rod,

I would just like to say ... I finally want to say I follow all steps of the 7 step job search. Before, I only followed Step #1, Step #2, Step #3, Step #4. It has taken me a long time to get up the COURAGE TO follow through to actually picking up the telephone to verbally speak with the advocate from Step #3. Although she was not the correct advocate for Step #5, she did tell me to give her my information so she could contact me back later today with the correct person I need to connect with.

Before I allowed her to get off the phone I did ask if I could contact her back to follow up if I haven't heard from her - she was very pleasant and she said that would be fine.

I want to let everyone know if you follow all steps in the 7 Step Job Search it will lead you the right way...landing a job.

When I first was introduced to the new ETP Network "7 Step Job Search"© system in December I was amazed at its simplicity. My first thought was “will these steps actually work”? Well, you will be amazed at the results that I have witnessed first hand.

Let’s take a look at what each step of the system entails:

IDENTIFY YOUR CORE SKILLS: Seems easy enough to identify what your core skills are. Want to use about 3-5 skills. Mine are Project Management, Business Analyst, and Technical Analyst. What are yours?
FIND WHAT THE MARKET DEMAND IS FOR YOUR CORE SKILLS: The best way to gauge whether your core skills are in demand is to use the job site INDEED. In the search criteria enter one of your core skills, say, within a 25 mile radius of your home zip code. If your search returned 50 or more jobs, then you are golden. If not, try widening your search to 50, 75, 100 miles and see what the results are, of course, only enter the larger radius if you are willing to travel for your position. If you still don’t get enough returning on your core skills search, then maybe we need to look at a different skill set or possibly different titles for your core skills.
USING ONLINE AND NETWORKING RESOURCES, REVIEW JOB DESCRIPTIONS WITH THE EMPHASIS ON CORE REQUIREMENTS: Plain and simple, use INDEED or other job search resources to find positions that match your core skills. You can also use your network to find any possible openings they might know about.
FIND AND CALL ADVOCATES TO CLARIFY THE POSITION AND SELL IF APPROPRIATE: Here comes the clear difference in what ETP is doing as compared to other job search approaches. Find someone you know (or in some cases you don’t know) that can be an advocate for you within the company. This could be the HR recruiter for the position, someone in your network you know that works at the company, or, in my case, someone that you have something in common with. (For example: Linkedin group went to school together (alumni), etc...) Your goal is to talk to someone to clarify the position.
SUBMIT VALUE PROPOSITION (COVER LETTER, RESUME AND JOB DESCRIPTION) TO ADVOCATE: Once you find an advocate, now it is really time to sell yourself. Submit your cover letter a (targeted!) resume and the job description to the advocate. Make sure to mention a good time to follow-up with the advocate.
FOLLOW-UP WITH ADVOCATE: Follow-up at the agreed upon time.
Repeat. Repeat this process until you have landed! So there it is, in 7 steps; now let’s take a look at my own personal example of how the system worked for me.

I found a position on INDEED I thought was a 95% fit for my experience and core skills in the HRIS analyst arena. (Step 1, 2 and 3) I then proceeded to step 4, to find an advocate to clarify the position. I looked for a recruiter at the company that might be in my network. I could not find one, so then I opened up my search on Linkedin to include everyone in HR that worked at the company.

I found a couple of matches, one, in particular, looked like he might be in the department in HR where the position might have resided. I clicked on the link in Linkedin and found he was a level 3 connection, but, he was also part of the same project management group that I also belong to and he was accepting messages from the group. I then sent him a note via Linkedin introducing myself and if he would be willing, based on my value proposition, to help me clarify the open HRIS Analyst position. After I sent the note via Linkedin I continued to search for information about the company, including phone numbers for there main HQ office and looked in Linkedin for more advocates.

Before I could continue my search for advocates an e-mail appears in my inbox. It is from the gentleman, whom I have not met before, about my Linkedin request to clarify the position. He stated that if I sent him my value proposition, (Step 5) and, if it is as good as a match as I said it would be, he would be happy to personally walk my resume over to the recruiter for the position. I submitted my cover letter, targeted resume and job description to my new advocate, with the stipulation that if he thought I was not a good candidate for the position, I would not want him to
submit my information to the recruiter. He reviewed the information and said I was a really good match and handed it to the recruiter.

I received a call for the recruiter to do a phone interview with him and then we set up a formal interview for the following week. I then followed-up with my advocate to thank him and to keep him informed of my progress with the position. (Step 6) The most amazing thing about my person example was the speed in which things took place. I saw the position at 8:00 AM, found and got response from advocate at 9:30 AM, got called and had phone interview with the recruiter by 10:30 AM!

Granted, the speed in which this took place was not typical. But, believe me when I say it, THE ETP Network "7 STEP JOB SEARCH"© WORKS!

Proper Etiquette For Effective Networking

Networking is about building and maintaining relationships. How to impart the right message to others about ourselves in order to avoid misunderstanding and foster trust – that is where
networking etiquette comes into play.

Proper networking etiquette is essential if you want to succeed.

These items can help:

When meeting someone or attending a meeting, always be on time.
If you can contribute – offer to help.
Ask permission first before you disclose sources of your information or contact.
If it can help others – share information that you learned during networking.
Inform your contacts of your progress.
Keep your promise if you say you’ll do something.
Be considerate - Find out the best time of the day that is convenient to contact people.
Be professional and avoid errors when writing emails or sending letters.
Before you meet someone, do research so you will be able to ask relevant questions.
Always dress appropriately, when meeting a contact. Remember, the manner you present yourself will reflect on you and on the person who referred you.

At the Event

Arrive on time. Before entering the event, preview the guest list to target at least 2 or 3 people to meet during the event.
Introduce yourself – both with first and last name, company affiliation (without titles), and a smile.
Offer a firm and friendly handshake.
Practice your introduction. Plan an effective way to describe yourself and the products orservices you provide. Avoid long and boring introductions.
Exchanges of business cards should be meaningful. Only exchange your card: when a person asks for one or when you offer assistance with something and want them to follow-up with you.
Join a group conversation perceptively. Observe and stand quietly for a second or two. Wait for a break in the conversation or for someone in the group to look your way. If no one looks in your direction and everyone continues the conversation without any break or glance in your direction, exit immediately with a polite “excuse me.”
Avoid monopolizing people’s time. Avoid having your time from being monopolized by the conversation by saying, “It was a pleasure speaking with you, please excuse me.” Then smile and move on. someone else, as well. After exchanging meaningful information, move graciously from
Introduce yourself to your tablemates before taking a seat.

After the Event

Follow up with new contacts. Sending a personal handwritten note – by regular mail within 24 to 48 hours – to every contact you met and connected is the best. Emailing and placing a personal phone call is also appropriate.
Keep your promises to the contacts you made.
Obtain permission from the people concerned before sharing information. When you have gotten overall permission to share someone’s information, send an email to both parties, stating: “I am referring Ana Smith to John Adams, in hopes that you two may be of service to each other. “ Then include full contact information of both people. This way every one is properly informed.

Networking is the Best Unemployment Insurance

Reality really starts to set in when that first check is received from the unemployment insurance fund. The check amount is not even close to your regular salary. Most other insurance policies at least match a loss. It's totally up to people to individually develop their own career insurance.

Being on unemployment was one of the lowest points in my career. The United States Marine Corps had invested $100,000 training me in electronics and microwave communications technology. When I was discharged from the U.S.M.C. I couldn't find a job. Filing for unemployment insurance kept me solvent for 6 months. With all the high tech quality training I received from the U.S.M.C. I was only able to land a job with a company that fixed answering machines. The upshot is the job paid way more than I was making being on unemployment. So that worked for me and the unemployment office.

Making it a daily "To Do", networking is the secret to success with having job offer choices. Let's rewind to see how this is accomplished. Many people network. Most people fail miserably in achieving the results they expect from networking. So they say networking does not work.

Since that unemployment experience many years ago, most of the jobs and all business opportunities I obtained has been achieved through developing a trusted network. That means networking whether you need to or not. The best time to network is when you don't need anything. Use this time to expand your sphere of influence; for yourself, family, friends and associates. When you're at the top of your business game, you're in the best position to help other people. The goal is to position yourself as a networking leader. You become central rain maker of your network.

People are more willing to help you, when you stay in touch regularly. That's called developing relationships. Calling someone only when you need something is called relationship abuse, "drive by" networking or networking leeching. Asking people how you can help them and doing it, pays long term dividends from the good will bank.

The best unemployment insurance is the opportunity crops produced from the seeds we plant with human capital relationships. Wouldn't be nice to be able to make a few phone calls that lead to multiple interviews. Before you know it, you're in that envious position of having to decide which 1 of 3 job offers to accept. This scenario is not a dream. It happens everyday. As you read this article, people are experiencing the success of no down time between jobs.

Many organizations offer opportunities to network, but none of them teaches how to network. So you're set up for failure before you go to your first networking event. One organization teaches the art of human relationship networking. In Chapter 5 Bob Burg covers 5 types of networkers:

- Superstar Networkers

- The Genuine Networker

- Connectors

Superstar Networkers
Superstar networkers, those whose businesses are extremely profitable and whose personal lives are filled with friends and loving relationships, share two powerful traits in common.

Number one, they are givers.

Number two, they are "connectors."

First let's discuss what I don't mean by givers. There are plenty of people who seem in a sense to be givers, but the way they give is so sharply limiting that it doesn't fulfill the qualities of giving we've been talking about at all -- nor does it produce the same results. These fall into two broad categories.

The Quid Pro Quo Networker
This is the person who gives only in order to get something back. (Or, as the esteemed Dr. Hannibal Lecter put it so eloquently, "Quid pro quo, Clarice … quid pro quo.") This type of pseudonetworker always has an agenda when they do anything for another, and they soon gain a reputation for being that way.

While a QPQ networker can and sometimes does attain his share of business, he will never develop the kind of long-lasting, mutually beneficial, give-and-take relationships with others that the superstar networker will enjoy. He will never elicit in others those feeling of knowing, liking and trusting that is the hallmark of the genuine networker's relationships. If he does get anything back from the relationships he forms, it will at most be exactly what he gave in the first place and no more -- and most likely, it will come grudgingly. What's more, it most likely will come back from that one source alone, and only that one time. This is not the case with our superstar networkers.

What's interesting about a QPQ giver is that he often thinks he is the ultimate networker. That's the belief system he comes from -- that networking is a strategy for getting from others. "Hey, sometimes I might even have to give a little first, and why not, if that's what it'll take to get what I want from them." Any success this person achieves will be mere inches on the yardstick of profitable superstar networking.

The Martyr
This is the person who gives in a way that ends up hurting himself. The Martyr actually sets himself up to be taken advantage of. Why would anyone possibly want to do this? Because there's a payoff -- though not the kind of payoff that yields success. It's the sort of payoff that says, "Look at me, I'm a martyr. Here I am, always doing for others, but no one does for me." In other words, it provides an excuse for not being successful.

This person is convinced that giving does not and cannot ever result in success. And he's right -- for him. But on an unconscious level, he's not really seeking success; his more primary goal is to stay within a comfort zone dictated by his belief system.

These are examples of what a true giver is not. Now let's look at what a true giver is.

The Genuine Networker
The superstar, mega-successful, high-dollar-earning networker is the greatest and most active giver you know. He is constantly referring business to others. She is always on the lookout for a piece of information that will interest someone in her network of friends and prospects -- regardless of whether or not it's business-related. He is always suggesting ways that someone from whom he purchases goods or services can improve his own business.

Genuine networkers give. They give actively and without expectation. They are always thinking of what they can give, how they can give, and to whom can they give.

They are who I term superstar networkers.

Tim Sanders, author of the bestseller, Love Is the Killer App, describes this as "the act of intelligently and sensibly sharing your intangibles." According to Sanders, our "intangibles" are our knowledge, our network, and our compassion.

Some superstar networkers seem to excel in one type of giving above all others and become known for this. For example, some individuals are always recommending great books, or constantly making introductions to people who can benefit one another.

Mike Litman, author of, Conversations With Millionaires, talks about how this creates what he calls an "asset of value." This, says Mike, is what you bring to the table in your relationships with others. And it doesn't cost you a cent! (Or perhaps the price of a book or a stamp.) The result? The other person's appreciation, which as you already know, can prove to be virtually priceless.

What's interesting is that successful, giving, profitable, superstar networkers seem to have a knack for hooking up with other success givers. It's not luck: they are specifically looking to identify these types of people. Why? Because they know that while average networking relationships are 50/50, the most exciting and profitable ones are 100/100. In other words, both people are trying so hard to help each other succeed, that success comes back to each of them in spades.

Connectors
I also mentioned that these people are "connectors." They are always asking themselves who they can set up with each other. They know that everyone they know or meet might be a valuable contact to someone else in their network. The fun part is introducing them and setting up the relationship.

You can probably see how the goodwill and positive feeling you elicit in others can come back to you in incredible abundance.

Again, the essence of being a Connector is the proactive drive to make the connections -- not out of a calculating intent to get something in return, but out of the joy and satisfaction of seeing the positive, exciting developments that can spring out of the new associations you help form. It's something very much like the pure joy of the creative artist: the thrill of the creation itself is its own reward.

Connectors don't worry about whether they'll "get anything" in return. They know they'll be taken care of -- and well taken care of. It's simply not an issue.

The essential point here is that being a Connector isn't a genetic fluke. You don't have to be born a Connector -- you can become one!

Simply develop (through practice) a habit of giving without expectation, without concern for what you're going to "get" from the other person. Know that when you tap into the sheer joy of giving and connecting, you're going to get and get big-time. Try not to think about it too much. Just get out there and try to give yourself away! Way before you even get close, you'll get back so much in return, you'll know you've become a superstar networker.

Guardian Angel 10 Commandments

As a child, my parents instilled in me the golden rule of neighborly etiquette. "Don't wear out your welcome at a friend's house". This rule is especially true in dealing with your guardian angel within a company organization. Just because your guardian angel is in a senior management position above the person you report to, it doesn't mean one should make a daily pilgrimage to their office.

These are rare instances that a person is blessed with an ally at the top of the corporate food chain. This guardian angel takes a genuine interest in your well being and career development. She or he may even mentor you from time to time. A guardian angel is not always a mentor. Their organizational position may mean you rarely see them, except for a per chance "hello" in the hallway.

Following the 10 commandments of maintaining a relationship with a corporate guardian angel, insures they will make themselves available to back you up in your time of need. A guardian angel in your corner facilitates having a champion to promote you and any ideas you wish to suggest in the company.

1. Don't abuse, take advantage of or brag about the relationship with your guardian angel. Respect their time and space.

2. Provide useful information that helps them do their job more effectively. If you come across an article of interest, email it to them and copy their assistant. Give them snippets of how your team is progressing on a project(s), with a blind carbon copy of "summarized" status reports. Find out their personal interests (sports, art collecting etc.). Then send them relevant articles or announcements about related events they can attend. Guardian angels like to relax too.

3. Show them you can hold your own in establishing your position in the organization. Guardian angels support people. They do not carry people. Your guardian angel could leave at any time. You will be in deep trouble, if you cannot stand on your own 2 feet with established accomplishments to your credit.

4. When having a conversation with your guardian angel, introduce them to any person you know who may pass by. This spotlights your team building skills.

5. Never tell a guardian angel stories about others, unless it is positive or upbeat.

6. Ask a guardian angel about things they do to achieve and maintain success. Show the same interest in them as they have in you. The longevity of any relationship is always based on reciprocity. "No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care" - Zig Ziglar

7. Don't allow guardian angels to base the relationship on making you their personal spy. If word gets out about it, and it will, you can kiss your career good bye at that organization. Even rats don't like other rats. Trust is the foundation of success for people and companies.

8. Resolve issues you may encounter with your boss, on your own. Guardian angels will hear about it either way. Remember commandment #3

9. Having a guardian angel is a blessing and privilege, not a right. They could disappear at any moment. So stay in touch with them after they leave an organization. Refer to commandment #3.

10. Align yourself with the guardian angel's gate keeper. Executive and Administrative Assistants are the true power houses behind executives.

Oh! Did I jump ahead about having a guardian angel, without providing the secret on how to acquire a guardian angel?

Westchester New Rochelle Networking Group Had Excellent Event

The Westchester New Rochelle Networking Group held their event on June 17th at TNT Classic Cars in the Bronx.

Carl Reid, CSI of Savvy Intrapreneur and Phyllis Shelton, CEO of iPower Global Solutions as always put on an excellent event. Not only did they welcome me, but treated me like family. Remember we are all are part of the ETP Family! I enjoyed getting a chance to talk to Carl and Phyllis having them share their wealth of knowledge both on networking and being entrepreneurs as they are business owners of several companies. I also had an opportunity to talk with Denworth Billy, CEO of Bolt Consulting another powerful ETP member. Excellent tasting food was provided by Sports Plus Cafe.

On a side note, TNT Classic Cars had some amazing cars and I have to be honest I fell in love with the red Acura they had. I am not a car person but this is a must see showroom for anyone.

I highly encourage you if you are in Westchester area to make a point to attend The Westchester New Rochelle Network Group events. And even if you are not, you should definitely stop by and broaden your network. I traveled almost two hours each way but the knowledge was well worth the trip.

As the weather gets warmer, I encourage you to continue to work on keeping your connections hot on the trusted network. Attend regional events and have lunch and dinner with fellow ETP Members. I hope to see all of you in the coming months at events and remember to make future Westchester events a must attend on your calendar.

Social Networking Changing Landscape for Colleges, Students

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, about 70 percent of all Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 have posted profiles on one of the online social networks. These online communities, including MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and others, are changing the way students communicate, and the impact of this Web 2.0 movement has filtered into the classroom on college campuses nationwide.

MySpace has a particular emphasis on high school and junior high students; Facebook focuses more on college students. Both online communities connect people with classmates, friends and those with similar interests. And they started out with a younger focus but now have members from all age groups.

LinkedIn has always aimed to reach an older, more professional target. It is a networking tool for colleagues to stay in touch, provide recommendations and make connections for job opportunities. The online video content resource YouTube, recently purchased by Google, is fast-becoming the place where many people find their entertainment. They don't watch television anymore -- they watch YouTube.

These Web sites all relate to one another through the broad "Web 2.0" designation, which refers to the fact the content is predominately user-generated, rather than the early Web pages that relied on paid or sponsored content. This has spawned a new way of teaching and learning, broadly defined as "Classroom 2.0."

Classmates can connect via Facebook and MySpace. Instructors from a wide variety of disciplines can show appropriate content from YouTube in class. Thus everyone can interact virtually on everything from homework to class projects using the power of these social networking sites.

In the classroom, however, some of these technologies may not always be the instructor's best friend. More and more faculty report technology-based distractions are growing, including the instructor's new pet peeve of students who covertly text message in class. Also, the resources on which today's students rely are often less authoritative and may include the Web 2.0 information site Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can update and therefore experts do not often verify the information. Many professors now ban Wikipedia from student research papers.

While these social networks can have a tremendous positive upside, parents and students alike should be aware dangers exist.

New awareness is being raised about the tangible harm caused by "cyberbullying." One less frequently mentioned negative for the Facebook generation is the Internet never forgets. The less-than-professional videos on YouTube or photos on Facebook have a tendency to resurface during a student's job search or even when applying to college. These images can literally follow a student for a lifetime.

While every new technology has its benefits, users have to be aware of its drawbacks and realize a learning curve is required to maximize the positives.
Educators continue to find new ways to utilize these social networks to enhance student learning. Students continue to push the envelope themselves and connect with their peers in new ways to increase their overall knowledge and skills. With technology changing at lightning speed, we all have to be ready for the "next-new-thing" and how it will inevitably affect our professional, personal and educational lives.

Life is a Mindset

Everything that’s coming into your life you are attracting into your life. And it is attracted to you by virtue of the images you’re holding in your mind. It’s what you’re thinking. Whatever is going on in your mind you are attracting to you.

Every thought of yours is a real thing – a force.

My first thought was: you have got to be kidding. Why would I ever want to be in this position to be worrying about paying my bills or where to get money to keep me going? But I kept on reading and it continued to say that the law attracts whatever is in your thoughts, even things I do not want in my life. It told me that the Law does not see the difference between I want or I do not want. The not, the no is no different from the want. And when you make your wishes they are espoused to the universe. I believe the book is talking about communication and the clarity to be understood. Whenever statements are negative the tendency is to ignore the negative portion of the statement. So to be understood, keep the statements or thoughts positive.

The Law of Attraction — the law of creation, this is the central principal of the discussion. Wants and desires are described as frequencies that are transmitted to the Universe and thereby create what is attracted in life. The focus of wants and desires are powerful. They drive our actions and behaviors that are easily viewed by all around and are reflected back as results. In the book it is identified as our life experiences. Fighting what we don’t want takes away from our focus of what we do want. It misdirects our energy and sends out the wrong frequency. The book suggests meditation on the statement: I am the Master of my thoughts.

In addition to mastering our thoughts the book talks about knowing our feelings as it is the quickest way to know our thoughts. Mindfulness meditation is a useful tool to learn how to be in the moment and minimize worrying about the future or regretting the past. Our emotions are frequencies that enhance our thoughts. If the two are not in agreement, our requests are fuzzy and answered in unexpected ways.

The Secret details the process of creation of our wants and desires:

1. Ask – Be clear about your request; remember to align your feelings and thoughts.

2. Believe – Have unwavering faith, believe it is already yours. Act as if it has already materialized. This brings to mind the phrase: Fake it until you make it.
3. Receive - Do not worry how you’re going to get it but that it already exits. To worry how this will get accomplished will send out a frequency that will confuse the request. Your emotions will no longer be in balance with your thoughts. If you try to force it into action it will be a step backwards; the desire should be effortless action.

The process is difficult. Making a clear concise request, believing it can materialize and acting as if it has been received takes a belief in ourselves, feeling that we deserve it and develop a mastery of our thoughts and feelings.

The secret about The Secret is to BE and FEEL happy now! It is the fastest way to actualize your wants and desires. Work on yourself to know what makes you happy and proceed from there.

As an epilogue to writing this review, I asked to win 10 million dollars. I went to http://thesecret.tv/ and printed out their download check, filled out my name, the numeric amount and the value in words. Then I pasted it somewhere I would continue to see it. I have not yet received even a portion of the funds but after two years in transition I am in the process of getting a position with the City of New York. Successful graduates of Cardinal Hayes High School collaborate to introduce student members of the Cardinal Hayes Investment Club to the art of making people connections through networking
Bronx, NY, March 4, 2008: Leopoldo Benavides, Secretary of the Cardinal Hayes Alumni Association, ensures student members of the Investment Club at Cardinal Hayes High School, in the Bronx, receive a well-rounded education by being exposed to various topics outside of financial strategies. Recently, members learned how to expand their sphere of influence in making connections with people through the art of networking. This engaging presentation was given by Rod Colon, Cardinal Hayes graduate and founder of the Empowering Today's Professionals (ETP) Network. After the presentation, Investment Club members shared their appreciation with Rod. "Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and knowledge of networking. I value your lesson and will try to begin building more and more relationships" offered one of the students.

Over the last twelve months, a close relationship has developed between the Cardinal Hayes Alumni Association and the Empowering Today's Professionals (ETP) Network. The synergy has evolved thanks to the efforts of some Cardinal Hayes graduates and their active involvement in the ETP Network: Jose Despian is a lawyer, Frank Boughner, who was previously a guest speaker at an ETP networking event, is an educator, sports coach and President of the Cardinal Hayes Alumni Association, and Julio Barreto is a lobbyist and journalist. At a 2007 ETP Network event, Fr. Joseph Tierney, Cardinal Hayes High School President, spoke briefly about the importance of the Alumni Association's goal in attracting alumni from all ages back to the school and reminding them of their social responsibility for making the school better than graduates left it for the next generation of "Hayesmen". Rod Colon then built on that theme by stating "We have added to our goals that 2008 is the year of community service for our ETP membership. As a proud Cardinal Hayes graduate, I'm honored to be able to give back to a high school that provided me with a quality education, that contributed so powerfully to my success."

Like the backward and forward looking Roman god Janus (for which the month January is named) this is a time of the year we take stock of what we have accomplished and where we think we are going to be heading. However, beyond a few spoken, half-hearted resolutions to incorporate change, the vast majority of us let time and habits determine our destination. Far too many people wind up in situations not of their choosing. So the question to ask yourself is "If I don't know where I am going, how do I know when I get there?"

Everybody has goals. What you think or feel, you generally do. If you are hungry, you eat. If you want money, you work. If you are bored or lonely you fill your time and attention with people or distractions. But what about the BIG stuff you want to be, do or have?? For that kind of achievement you need goals that cut through the day to day needs and distractions and half-hearted resolutions of the New Year.

What kind of BIG stuff?? Well that is up to you. But it all starts with a pen, paper and some dreams. A GOAL is nothing more than a dream with a DEADLINE! Believe me, it pays to write them down and review them EVERY day. The only way to create the future you desire is to take action in the present. NOW is the moment of effectiveness where you are either moving towards your goals or not. So instead of drifting around in the sea of life, why not set a course for the destinations of YOUR choice?

Here is a brief, yet effective method for accomplishing this:

1. Write down your dreams, wants and desires in the following format:I must (be, do or have) [insert the situation, or object of desire here].This is not the time to be wishy washy. Tell the universe what you want and its already in the works. Read up on "The Secret" or "The Law of Attraction".

2. Take each "I must" dream statement and make them SMART. There is a lot of info written about

S - Specific - the universe hates generalities. The more detail you can write about your goal makes it more real to you. So use your imagination and describe it detail.

M - Measurable - How many?, How Big? How Much?? Whether its a Cholesterol score or money in the bank... Whats the
number?

A - Action List - What are the steps you need to take in order to achieve your dream? This will change and might not be clear in the beginning. But as you start on the journey it becomes clear what is needed to do.

R - Relevant - Do I really want to do this? Does it conflict with my values and beliefs? How is it related to my other dreams? In other words -- What is your WHY for doing this?? Another hard question that needs to be answered. If you don't believe in the dream, you won't want to work on it.

T - Time Bound - When do I want this goal? What is the schedule of accomplishment. If you don't have a deadline, all you have is a wish.

3. Review these goals EVERY DAY!!! Have them in your planner or in your pocket or someplace handy. The "noise" and events of the day will distract and delay and push you off course. Take some action on your goals everyday for NOW is all you have to make some change.

In closing remember:

Yesterday was History. Tomorrow is a mystery. But Today is a Gift. That's why they call it the Present.

Now, make something Happen!!

End of the Year Is Prime for Job Hunting

I decided to write this because today happens to be the one year anniversary of me being laid off. And with this being the Holiday season, if you don’t have a job, it can be especially disheartening and painful. But, I wanted to give you some encouragement to those in transition.

I was laid off on Dec 11, 2006. I did not seeing it coming. I mean, how could I? I was a good employee and always received good evaluations from the user community. Ironically, that very morning, I was featured as a representative of the IT Staff at an in-house competition. But at 2:15, I was downsized by HR. Oh wait, I’m sorry they actually called it “right sizing." Well I can tell you it did not feel right to me.

You may notice I referred to myself as an employee. I had been working with Rod Colon as my coach for over a year but at that moment I still thought of myself as an employee. What followed was me going through the “poor Mike” process. But I did not get sympathy from Rod, I got a plan to solve the problem. With Rod’s rock and roll attitude and the “ABC to the Job Search”, I had no time for “poor Mike.” I was too busy continuing my search for new clients (Me Inc.) and networking. Both of which I had been doing while I was employed. I was ready and needed Rod’s extra push to move me into action again. This is why I recommend Rod Colon as a coach.

Currently, I am working for a Client I love. I have a written career backup plan and am working my way to 200 plus Linkedin connections. I am developing multiple streams of income. I am a much happier person. The Empowering Today's Professional methodology works.

I encourage you to keep up with your job search through the holidays. See the enclosed article for added incentive. Keep networking and YES looking for a full time job is a full time job.

Michael Canfora, host of the MNG, is mentored by Rod Colon (http://www.etpnetwork.com/) and is always there to support new and established ETP members. With Carl Reid, he has started the MNG blog. He is President of Vision Business Services and the Murry Bergtraum High School Alumni Association (MBHSAA). His goal for MNG is to increase attendance to 100 people during the monthly MNG meetings by June 2008. He is involved in various charitable organizations.

Rhonda Lamb has been attending the MNG events for several months. She talked about her experience at Toastmasters and how speaking in front of a crowd with confidence is becoming useful for her. Membership in Toastmasters can be a useful tool in developing your presentation skills. (MNG is exploring the possibility of starting an ETP Network chapter of Toastmasters.)

Terry Opalka extolled the virtues of networking and shared her experiences of being in transition. Her first experience lasted 2 years without a support system to help guide her through that period and the situation became quite discouraging. But from that time on she developed her network and support. Her second transition lasted 5 months but to paraphrase Terry’s words, the network may not have led to her present job, but it provided her with the energy and support to continue her efforts. Terry is currently working towards her PMP using http://www.cheetahlearning.com/. This is a highly rated program that guarantees passing in 3 attempts or your money back. It is an expensive program but we hear it is well worth the cost.

Joan Platt is currently in transition and testing her wings in recruiting. She has 20+ years in various IT roles. Her free time includes volunteering at the Lighthouse, Upwardly Global and MNG. She is continually developing her network and appreciates the support and energy the ETP Network provides.

Dessalines Sealy is an entrepreneur with a background in fashion, but is also experienced in the real estate market. He discussed taxes for home businesses and recommended the book: Lower Your Taxes - Big Time!: Wealth-Building, Tax Reduction Secrets from an IRS Insider by Sandy Botkin, available on Amazon.com. One jewel gleaned from this book is that medical expenses are 100% deductible without involving the percentage of your salary that those expenses must exceed. (This prompts us to remind you that in your time of transition, expenses incurred during your job search are deductible! That includes transportation costs to interviews, job fairs and networking events. Periodicals, membership dues, entry fees to events and volunteering should also be included. Jason Thigpen is an entrepreneur and has a very successful career in technology at UBS . He owns a full service computer consulting company based in the Bronx , with the goal of turning it into a TriState-wide organization. He is always there to help others with their networking goals.

Congratulations to Ron Rich ards on receiving his PMP certification; we know it was hard work. Ron embodies the key elements of ETP and networking. He is always there to help others and to assist at MNG events. He is also a consultant for a NYC government agency. Ron believes that with the teachings of the ETP network, he was able to reinvent himself.

The ETP Network: The Uncommon Network

In the time it takes to read this sentence, hundreds of ETP Network members worldwide will be contacted for job interviews, sign employment contracts, and make long sought-after career changes. Of course there are many other networking groups that can make similar claims, and after all, aren’t these groups all pretty much the same? You join the group, make some phone calls, share leads over the Internet, and then prime yourself for the big interview, right? Then you accept the job offer, start collecting the handsome paycheck, and toss your networking contact list into the shredder because, after all, who needs it anymore, right?

Oddly enough, ten or fifteen years ago, this might have been a likely scenario. In today’s business environment, however, this plan of action is part fantasy and part death wish. Of course it’s normal to regard the attainment of a career goal as an exhilarating and rewarding event in one’s life, but it’s also a grave mistake to regard it as an endpoint on some career management timeline or as the final link in a long chain of seminars, handshakes, business card exchanges, and 30-second elevator speeches.

What’s become increasingly clear in today’s fast-paced technology-centered business environment is that the power which drives success comes from the networking machinery in use once the career management journey is initiated. The principle in play is simple and elegant: The more unique and polished your networking machinery, the greater your chances of not only attaining your career goals, but re-engaging that very same machinery without missing a beat if the new position suddenly vaporizes.

ETP Network members know that theirs is a most uncommon network, a network built with meticulous care over the years by founder Rod Colon in his mission to empower today’s professionals with the tools, resources, and values needed to achieve their career management goals. But what are the real secrets of its success? What makes the ETP Network such an uncommon network among so many other groups?

1. Becoming CEO of ME, Inc.

New ETP Network members are automatically designated the CEO of ME, Inc. and charged with the responsibility of planning and executing the strategic takeover of their own careers. As CEOs of ME, Inc., ETP Network members are expected to permanently discard the all-too-human traits of tolerating obstacles and wallowing in negativity. Instead, fledgling ETP Network CEOs quickly learn to master the art of problem-solving, put a positive spin on virtually everything they say and do, and convert obstacles into opportunities.

Not long ago, a new ETP Network member contacted Rod Colon seeking to engage his services as a career coach. Just ten minutes into the call, the neophyte member was shocked to discover that Rod did not wish to coach him — at least not right away — because of the negative tone infusing everything he said. Rod assured him that once his inner values were more properly aligned with those of any real CEO, he would be most happy to coach the outer man. So is this a hard-nosed, intolerant, and uncaring approach to dealing with a new member? Not at all. This is the networking equivalent of “tough love” and it’s highly effective because it places the onus for success on the member, not the coach.

2. The Reciprocity Factor

In a particularly insightful book about networking called "Never Eat Alone", author Keith Ferrazzi describes a person he calls “The Networking Jerk.” We’ve all seen networking jerks. They prowl big networking events and view them as parcels of real estate to be bulldozed by relentless invasions of personal space and an abject disregard for tactful introductions. To sum it up, the entire focus of the Networking Jerk is “What can you do for me and how soon can you do it?”

ETP Network members learn early on that truly successful networking is predicated by a genuine desire to offer one's skills and talents to individuals, small groups, or even entire organizations without assurances that favors will be returned proportionally or that “opportunity dividends” will be instantly dispensed. In simple terms, if your goal is to get a job – quickly – and you find it necessary to step all over fellow networkers to get it, the ETP Network is not for you.

3. The Never-Ending Learning Curve

When it comes to networking, hubris ranks as one of the world’s deadliest sins. Once mired in believing that we know all there is to know, it’s painful to admit that we’ve been wrong or that there is far more to learn in the quest to manage careers and form meaningful bonds with people who might want to help us along on our journey. Keith Ferrazzi goes a step farther and proclaims hubris a career management killer.

Everyone, regardless of intellect, experience, wisdom, or self-worth, has the capacity to learn from others and build meaningful relationships. Arrogance is rarely appreciated in networking organizations and tends to build sudden and often disproportionate amounts of ill will and mistrust.

To counteract the tendency toward lapsing into arrogance, the ETP Network offers a smorgasbord of online training, seminars, forums, conferences, and a wide range of other resources that provide nourishment for the eager networker's mind.

4. Staying Interconnected

Harnessing the power of the Internet — the greatest switchboard ever built — ETP Network members live in continuous information-sharing mode. As members both nourish - and become nourished by - fellow members through forums such as LinkedIn, the effect is like a torrential downpour of leads, contacts, and opportunities in which no one seems to mind being without an umbrella.

As exciting as current Internet technologies are, ETP Network members can look forward to even more exciting developments such as unified communications, hybrid networks, cross-connecting contact databases, and MP3-based multiformat resumes. With new web technologies evolving constantly, it’s likely that the Internet will remain as one of the ETP Network’s most promising resources.

5. Mentoring and Coaching

Even CEOs recognize the need for developing special bonds with those who can guide them through particularly difficult business decisions. As successful ETP Network members advance their career goals, the spirit of compassion and comradery that are hallmarks of the ETP Network often compels many to seek out those who could benefit from a unique perspective or two. In this manner, the nurtured become the nurturers and they become eager to share their experiences, forge connections, and guide newcomers through the increasingly complex world of career management networking. The ageless cycle of acquiring and passing wisdom for the benefit of everyone is repeated yet again.

6. Cultivating Your Passion

People who exude passion about what they love to do are like magnets. Put a few in the middle of a networking event and let the natural ebb and flow of conversation take over and simply watch the crowd. Those who speak with genuine passion about their own interests are easy to spot because of the excitement, enthusiasm, and intensity with which they shape their surroundings.

ETP Networking events provide a unique forum for members to cultivate their passion and infect the crowd with their enthusiasm. From keynote speakers to first-time attendees, the opportunities are almost endless for individuals to bring excitement and energy about their genuine interests to the event.

It’s generally considered an impossible task to measure the impact of one person’s passion on someone whose mind is receptive to it. What is known, however, is that passion about work, academics, the arts, or just about anything else is very much like dropping a lit match onto a pile of very dry kindling. Only each individual’s willingness to learn and their desire to achieve true success affects the intensity of the fire.

A Shameless ME-Centric Conclusion

Although I am a new member of the ETP Network, I have found each passing day to be filled with unique challenges and opportunities. The challenges are often daunting but with each new attempt to meet them head-on, I find more and more opportunities also presenting themselves, waiting to be explored.

Yes, I am that new ETP Network member who Rod chose not to coach right away. Of course I now understand why this was a necessary decision for him. After all, I had gotten bogged down with decades of negative baggage and it took Rod all of ten minutes to spot it. After convincing me of the dire need to adjust my values, he gave me some sensible tips on how to make significant improvements in daily interactions with those around me. After putting those suggestions to work, I’m now getting more phone calls, people are starting to contact me again about my web communications business, and in general the world seems a lot brighter.

Then again, there was no way to outsource my values adjustment problem. As the CEO of ME, Inc. along with literally thousands of supportive fellow CEOs in this most uncommon network, the responsibility was all mine.
